Happy New Year!
Donnacha and I spent our last full day in Paris exploring Père Lachaise Cemetery for most of the day. We finished the afternoon watching our friend Rhob play a set in Shakespeare and Co. book shop followed by a walk along the Seine, it was really nice spending the day by ourselves while Kate and Eric went to Disney for a second day. You can't keep Kate away, she's Disney crazy!
Père Lachaise was unbelievable. We walked around for hours (including a quick lunch break). You could seriously walk around there for days it's so big and there is so much to see. I'm a big weirdo and I love graveyards anyway (despite not wanting to be buried in one), so I wanted to stop and photograph everything and read all the graves and look inside the broken tombs. The only "famous" graves we saw were Jim Morrison's, Edith Piaf's and Oscar Wilde's ones. Oscar Wilde's' grave used to be completely covered in lipstick marks and writing but they cleaned it and put a barrier around it which I think is really stupid, I think Oscar Wilde of all people would appreciate it being left how it was.
I would definitely recommend a visit to Père Lachaise if you're ever in Paris. I guess coming from a small city like Dublin, seeing a graveyard that big is so crazy.

Père Lachaise has an eerie beauty all its own, Emma, and the expressions on your face and Donnacha's match those of the cemetery's statues. I'm glad you had the opportunity to visit the grave of Jim Morrison and the plots of other famous people. Thank you for another very interesting walking tour of Paris. My year is going very well, thank you, and I wish the same for you and yours, dear friend!

ReplyDeletewow that is one gorgeous cemetery! I love exploring old cemeteries. I find them to be extremely relaxing while Kevin thinks its morbid as hell.
ReplyDeletei had no idea france had a disney! and that cemetery is gorgeous- so many elaborate tomb stones and statues, and i liked the graffiti bits too. i've never gone wandering through one, but now i'm definitely intrigued
