Fair Neutral Skin- Concealer and Foundation Swatches

This is a blog post I've been wanting to write for a while now. I know it will only be helpful to people with skin tones very similar to mine but I wanted to post it anyway. One of the things I do when I'm researching a potential base product is look for images of swatch comparisons. Over the past few years in particular I've gotten quite adept at shade matching myself online. I find the swatches on brand websites can often be unreliable so I try to find swatches from online reviews. Particularly those that compare different brands as that's the best way for me to see if a shade might match me. Keep in mind that these are more saturated swatches than the amount of foundation you would apply to your face and they are dried down for the most part. It's not so much about the depth of the shades compared to the skin on my arm as it is about the tones and undertones compared to one another. Hopefully, this is helpful if you're looking for your shade match in the Kosas concealer for example and you know your shade in the Lisa Eldridge foundation, you can easily see if they are comparable. I know everyone wants different things from their foundation or concealer whether it's having the perfect match, one shade deeper, a concealer that perfectly matches their foundation or one that's a tiny bit brighter for under the eyes. As you can see the range of shades is quite wide as are the undertones. All of these shades work for me, some better than others. It completely depends on the coverage level too as a sheer skin tint is more forgiving if it's not an exact shade match because there's less pigment. There are a wide variety of brands here, drugstore, mid-range, high end and luxury. I have fair neutral skin and I like to match my neck more than my face because I have a mixture of undertones on my face as well as pigmentation and freckles which is why I can get away with such a variety of shades. If you have a similar skin tone to mine, you might find this helpful in some way.

Bodyography Glitter Pigments- Ambient Lux Collection

If you've read my blog for a while you may know that I'm a big fan of the brand Bodyography, in particular their Glitter Pigments. They're probably my most used eye product over the past couple of years. I would say I use them more than any palette I own. I've listed all the blog posts I've featured them in (Ten in total) at the end of this post if want to see more of the shades in action. For now though, let's talk about the new Ambient Lux Collection. It consists of four brand new shades, Spirit Quartz, Blue Morpho, Aura Glow and Solar Flare. As difficult as it was I didn't pick up all four shades. I decided to leave Solar Flare (for now) as it seemed like I could make something similar by mixing Stellar and Eclipse. Instead I bought the three former shades as I didn't have anything like them in my Glitter Pigments collection. I absolutely love these new shades, they did not disappoint. I used all three in the look below and I already can't wait to wear them again. They are officially on sale from the Bodyography website on Friday November 27th, however they are available now on Guru Makeup Emporium. 

I've been wanting to try more products from Danessa Myricks Beauty so I bought the Dew Wet Balm and Beauty Oil Mini Kit, Vision Flush in Bread-N-Butter from an Irish retailer Makeup By Claire and she was kind enough to throw in a sample size of the Vision Cream Cover Foundation in the shade No. 3 which was sadly too dark for me but I had ordered a sample size of shade No. 2 with my Guru Makeup Emporium order and that was the perfect shade match for me. It's €5.99 for a 2.5ml sample which I think is such a great idea especially at the moment when people can't get out to the shops but don't want to waste money on a foundation shade that doesn't work for them. I have been testing out the products over he past couple of weeks and they're really amazing to use. I've only tried the Vision Cream Cover a couple of times so I definitely need to test that out some more but the Beauty Oil, Vision Flush and Dew Wet Balm are all beautiful products that look amazing on my skin. I have a couple more of her products from Guru Makeup Emporium so I'll be trying those out soon too.

I decided to start sharing the tools that I use to create my makeup looks because they are such an important part how I apply my makeup. I was recently sent some bareMinerals brushes in PR (which I have been loving) and some Rebeluna Cosmetics Brushes as a gift from the lovely Gracey O'Connell  (who if for some reason you're not following her) is an Irish makeup artist and content creator. She is also a Brand Ambassador for Rebeluna Cosmetics. We were chatting about the brushes and when I told her I hadn't tried them yet she very kindly insisted on sending me some to try. I've since ordered some more myself (after pestering Gracey to tell me her favourites) as I loved the ones she sent so much. The R02 Foundation brush is amazing at quickly buffing on foundation, I've been absolutely loving using it. I also love the sponge and having only recently tried Beauty Blender, I can safely say that I prefer the Rebeluna sponge. Even better Rebeluna is actually an Irish brand and I am trying to support Irish brands whenever I can. I had heard a few people I follow and trust mention how much they love the brushes and I can totally see why now.

Uoma Beauty

It's been over a month since I last wrote a beauty related blog post, the break was completely unintentional. The Black Lives Matter Movement on social media became the focus on my attention and I just had no desire to post anything beauty related. One of the things I've been doing as an act of active anti-racism is spending my money on Black Owned brands and companies. I figured one of the ways I can help in a very small way is to promote Black Owned Beauty Brands as it's something I have such a huge interest in. Over the past month I've come across so many incredible brands that I had never heard of before. A brand I had heard about however is Uoma Beauty. One of things that first struck me about Uoma Beauty when I started looking at their products was their homepage message which states :

"Our weirdo in chief is a rebel with a cause"  

"Her mission, using her platform, is to empower all those who have been left out. Every person deserves to walk into a beauty hall and feel inspired and included." 

I absolutely love this message and I think it's something that all beauty brands should aspire to. There is no excuse for not having an extensive shade range anymore. It should come as standard, there should be something for everyone. Nobody should walk up to a makeup counter and not be able to find a foundation shade to match their skin.

The Uoma Beauty Founder, CEO and Creative Director is Sharon Chuter who has worked for Revlon, L'Oréal and Benefit Cosmetics. Born in Nigeria she has drawn inspiration from her Afro Heritage and created modern and innovative products that are suitable for all skin tones. You can read more about Uoma Beauty here. 

The product I was most excited to try was the Say What?! Foundation. It has 51 shades and 6 custom formulas to cater to the unique needs of different skin colour groups, or as they call them "Skin Kins". For example, their formula for Dark Brown skin addresses the most common skin concerns for that skin tone which is dullness and the most common skin type is oily/combination so this particular formula has ingredients to brighten the skin. It is such a genius way to create a foundation range and something I have never seen from any other brand. This alone made me want to buy from Uoma Beauty. 

The website also has a shade matching feature which matches you based on foundations you already have. I used it and was matched to shade T1N (I compared it to the Urban Decay and bareMinerals foundations I have that feel are the best shade matches for me). You can see the comparison swatches below to see how accurate the shade finder is. This is the shade I probably would have picked for myself anyway, despite being cool toned with some redness, my neck is more neutral so I tend to go for neutral foundation shades. I could probably have used T2N either but the former is a more dead on match for my skin especially in the Winter when I have less freckles. The formula for the White Pearl (very fair skin) range is formulated to help with hypersensitivity and redness which are some of the common skin concerns of very fair skin. 

The formula in general claims to be weightless, long-lasting, adjustable coverage, vibrant matte yet hydrating and has a blurring technology to minimise the appearance of pores and softens fine lines. 

I have to completely agree with all of the claims. I was slightly hesitant about the matte finish but I needn't have worried as this foundation gives you the best of both worlds. It looks and feels hydrating and depending on how you prep and finish your skin you could definitely wear this whether you have dry or oily skin. I tend to prep with a more hydrating base as I prefer a dewy finish. This is where the Beauty Bakerie (also a Black Owned Beauty brand) Baking Oil comes in as it gives a really smooth and hydrated base, perfect for underneath this foundation. 

I also bought the Stay Woke Concealer which I ordered in shade T1, which is actually slightly darker than the foundation so next time I'll probably order T05 or T075 as I'd prefer it slightly lighter but this shade does still work on me. This is again a lightweight, creamy formula that blends out so easily and covers what I need it to cover. I'm really loving it, so much so that it's a rival for my beloved bareMineral Serum Concealer. I've swatched it beside some of my other concealers below so you can hopefully you have some kind of reference. 

Of course I couldn't resist a couple of lip products too. The main catalyst for my order was this photo of Taylor Anise wearing the Boss Gloss Liquid Marble in the shade No Stoppin which you can see me wearing below. It's such a beautiful, comfortable and long-lasting gloss with a glass like finish. It contains lychee extract to protect and soften the lips too. This is a big winner for me and I'm already contemplating what other shades to get. I couldn't not get a matte lipstick too so I bought the Badass Icon Matte Lipstick in the shade Tina. This formula is probably the most similar to my favourite Lisa Eldridge True Velvet lipsticks. It's so light, smooth and comfortable with the most amazing pigment that lasts incredibly well too. It contains mango butter for hydration too, so it doesn't feel like you're wearing a matte lipstick at all. The shade is so beautiful, I love orange reds so I know I'll get lots of wear out of this. I swatched it compared to some of my other favourite orange reds for shade reference.

I'm loving all four of the Uoma Beauty products, as you can see the foundation is a great shade match and despite being a matte finish, my skin still looks radiant. It's one of those foundations that actually looks better as the day goes on. I definitely have more of their products on my wishlist including the Double Take Contour Stick and the Black Magic Carnival Colour Palette and the bright pink Badass Icon Matte Lipstick in the shade Whitney. Dreaming Of The Green And Gold

I'm back with a makeup post today, but firstly I wanted to say thank you to anyone who read my last post. I'm aware most people don't bother with blogs much any more but I have been writing on Ol' Green Eyes for almost ten years now (in June) and I don't intend on stopping any time soon. This blog has always been an outlet for me, creative and otherwise and I appreciate those of you who took the time to read about something that has nothing to do with what I usually write about here. It's been so therapeutic for me to connect with so many people who sent me messages saying that they had read my words. This world of beauty blogging has brought me so much joy, especially at this, the most difficult period of my life. I am thankful to have this outlet and to continue to use skincare and makeup as a form of self-care and creativity.

These photos were actually taken back in March, St. Patrick's Day to be precise. The last day I remember being truly happy. It was before lockdown and I was off work and had a lovely relaxing morning. We went for a walk around an empty Dublin caressing my still pregnant belly and talking about the future as we always did on our day off walks. I wasn't going to even bother writing a post on this look but I figured it was the last makeup look I did when Milo was still alive and for some reason that made me feel compelled to share it.

I had purchased the Bodyography glitter pigment in the shade Prism in November and hadn't gotten around to creating a look with it yet. Since it's a duo chrome green/brown I thought St Patrick's day would be the perfect opportunity to try it out properly. I decided to create a green and gold look so I added another Bodyography pigment called Bubbly in the centre of my eyelid for an extra pop, almost like a spotlight eye. The base is just a mid-toned matte brown swept across the socket of my eyelid and Prism blended out all across my lid. I mostly use my fingers to apply these glitter pigments as it gives the best intensity of colour. I then take a densely packed synthetic brush and blend out the edges carefully before using fluffier brush if I feel I need to finish any blending.

If you're looking for natural and radiant skin, I highly recommend this base combination- Glossier Futuredew and Clarins Skin Illusion Foundation. Obviously it depends on your skin type, if you have more oily skin this combination might be too much but I have combination skin and I just apply Futuredew where I want the most shine and then I'll smooth whatever is left over onto the rest of my face. I think I've said it before here but any time I look back at photos of my past makeup looks I'm always the happiest with how my skin looks when I'm wearing Skin Illusion foundation. What I really love about it is that it just evens out your skin tone and gives such a natural and radiant finish to your skin. Because the texture is quite light and easy to blend, it's the perfect foundation for layering with the likes of Glossier Futuredew as it doesn't feel like I'm wearing lots of makeup. It just makes your skin look hydrated and fresh and doesn't mask your natural complexion. My friend Céline is also a huge fan of this foundation, so please go and have a look at it on her if you want to see it on a darker skin tone than mine.

I do have dark circles too so I apply a small amount of concealer only where I need it, mainly in my inner corners and under my eyes closer to my nose. I like to use a hydrating concealer that has great coverage (my favourite is the bareMinerals Complete Coverage Serum Concealer) and I find this technique means that you can apply very little concealer so that your base still looks natural and seamless. I like for my concealer to be the same shade as my foundation rather than lighter. However If I do find I want a touch more brightness I'll add the smallest amount of YSL Touche Éclat Illuminating Pen just to attract some light to that area.

I kept the rest of my makeup quite neutral, applying my favourite neutral blush shade, Glossier Cloud Paint in Dusk on my cheeks and Charlotte Tilbury Bitch Perfect lipstick which is a great warm nude shade for fair skin tones. I also applied some of the Kevyn Aucoin Glass Glow Face in Prism Rose on my cheeks for an added sheen to my skin. The more I use this the more I love it. I think this plus Futuredew plus Skin Illusion is the holy trinity for super radiant skin. Obviously it completely depends on how you have prepped you skin for makeup too. Ice Cream Kisses

If you follow me on social media you'll know I'm a huge fan of makeup artist Jo Baker. I'm constantly inspired by her work and how she merges red carpet with editorial to create the most unique and beautiful makeup looks for her clients. I'm especially enamoured by her work with actress Lucy Boynton. Obviously Lucy is stunning but I love how the makeup seems to suit her style so much, it doesn't take away from her outfits or overpower her delicate features. It's so refreshing to see such different red carpet makeup and I always look forward to seeing her posts on Instagram and the inspiration behind each look. 

One of the recent looks that blew me away was at the Vanity Fair Oscar party where Lucy wore a pastel Miu Miu dress and the makeup was incredible. You can see it here. It was quite simple but went perfectly with the overall look and I immediately wanted to try my hand at recreating it. Jo used a lot of Chanel Beauty products and the glitter under the eyes was Lemonhead LA Violet Hour Spacepaste. I didn't have this one but I did have Mulholland which is a rose gold. On my eyelids and on the lower lash line I applied a mixture of two shades from the Fenty Beauty Snap Shadows Pastel Frost palette, a pink called Ice Cream Kisses and a Lavender called Lady Pimp. I then added a touch of the Bodyography Glitter Pigments in the shades Eclipse and Halo just in the centre of my eyelid. 

I used the Glossier silicone detailer brush to apply the Spacepaste under my lower lashes. I brought it down lower than I usually would with eyeshadow but I think it works because you can really see the glitter and it makes it into more of a feature. I applied a couple of coats of Le Volume de Chanel mascara, I definitely don't have Lucy Boynton's amazing lashes but this mascara gives me lots of volume although not as much length as I'd like. 

My friend very kindly picked me up the new Bite Beauty Changemaker Foundation when she was in New York. I've only tried it a couple of times but so far I love the finish, I think I just need to figure out what way to best prep my skin before using it. I've also been using the Kevyn Aucoin Glass Glow Face since I got in the The Loop Duty Free on the way to Paris. It's such a gorgeous multi-use product. I've tried it under foundation and on the high points of the face which is how I used it for this look. It really does give that glass skin look without much pigment. It does have some micro glitter in it but that doesn't bother me.

On my lips I wanted something with a light pink hint to it that wouldn't wash me out so I used the Bellàpierre Cosmetics mineral lipstick in the shade Catwalk and a little bit of my beloved Clarins Instant Light Lip Perfector on top. I recently repurchased my favourite Glossier Cloud Paint shade Puff which is a light pink that works really well for this tonal look.

Star Gold

Over Christmas I got some lovely presents including the Charlotte Tilbury Eyes to Mesmerise in the shade Star Gold and the NARS Audacious lipstick in the shade Carmen from the Studio 54 collection. I wore them together a couple of weeks ago and added some Bodyography Glitter Pigment in Bubbly in the centre of the lid for some extra glitz and dimension. I added a thin wing using Glossier Pro Tip and Urban Decay Perversion Mascara. 

On my face I used a combination of Glossier Futuredew and Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk. I absolutely loved how these products looked together, my bottle of Luminous Silk is almost finished and it's one I'll definitely be repurchasing. I try not to buy into hype, but this foundation is a cult product for good reason. If you like a foundation that gives a radiant finish to your skin (and who doesn't) this is one of the best I've ever tried and worth the money in my opinion. 

I've only ever tried a small sample of the NARS Audacious lipsticks before so I'm delighted to finally have one, especially in such beautiful packaging. It's a stunning shade of red and the formula is creamy but long-wearing and so comfortable. I love the bronze/gold winged out eyes and red lips. It's nothing new or exciting but it's one of those go-to looks that makes me feel great.

Mulholland Drive

I've been wanting to try Lemonhead LA glitters for the longest time so when I saw that they were stocked on Cult Beauty before Christmas I had to make an order. They also happened to be offering a free Mulholland Spacepaste with every purchase so that made it even sweeter, two for the price of one. I was so excited to try them out myself after seeing lots of different people using them. 

I decided to go for a sort of tonal look based on the rose gold shade of Mulholland. I used Bodyography Eclipse Glitter Pigment as a base as it's the same shade as the glitter and then NARS Powermatte Lip Pigment in the shade American Woman which is described as a chestnut rose. I used Glossier Cloud Paint in Storm on my cheeks to bring the rosy colour onto my face and tie the look together. 

I'm still loving using Glossier Futuredew under my foundation, particularly with more long lasting or full coverage foundations like Double Wear Light or the IT Cosmetics CC Cream which is what I did for this look. As you can see despite it being full coverage it doesn't look heavy at all. 

I love how this look turned out, I think the different shades of rosy pink worked really well together. I was so impressed with the Lemonhead Spacepaste, it's such an easy product to use as the glitter is suspended in a kind of gel so you can either apply it with a flat brush or your finger for a lighter application. I also really enjoyed wearing the NARS Powermatte for the first time. I bought one of the Studio 54 sets on sale at Christmas with three shades in it. I blended out the edges slightly with a pencil brush for a softer look.
