Face Of The Day- Renaissance Red

I was at my sister's new apartment on Wednesday and she gave me her Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance Eye Shadow Palette to take home with me and try out. I actually got her the palette, amongst other things, in Sephora in New York (I think she spent as much money as me!)

To be honest until she asked me to get it for her, it hadn't really been on my radar. I knew what it was of course but there's a part of me that tends to ignore brands that are harder to get hold of here in Ireland. I don't see the point in getting exciting over products that I can't actually see in person.

However when I brought it back to our AirBnB that evening I took it out of the box to have a proper look at it and I was so surprised by how much I liked it. I definitely prefer warmer tones on my eyes colour and I loved the unusual mixture of shades and finishes in this palette. There are 14 shades in total, 11 ultra matte, two metallic and one satin finish. As the name might suggest, the palette was inspired by the shades found in Renaissance paintings, a similar idea to that of the Lime Crime Venus palette which I bought when it first came out 3 years ago and barely used because I was so mad about the hacking debacle (thankfully I paid for mine with PayPal so my account wasn't emptied unlike many others but I've refused to support them ever since).

Anyway, on to the palette itself. It has very similar packaging to the original Urban Decay Naked Palette which I'm told has since been revamped. I feel like the price of this palette definitely warrants more sturdy and less prone to getting grubby packaging, but having said that, the pink velvet is quite pretty.

I've been playing with the palette since Wednesday and I've been loving it so far. Here's the first look I created with it.

MR16-3

To begin I spritzed my skin with the Urban Decay B6 Priming Spray*. This is definitely one of those makeup steps that you can skip, however I find this absolutely reduces how oily my skin can get throughout the day so if you have oily skin, this might be one to try out. I then applied Lancôme Teint Idole Ultra Wear Foundation* in the shade Beige Opale. This is Lancôme's best selling liquid foundation and has been around for years so I was hoping I'd love it. It's meant to be high coverage, long lasting and smudge proof. I don't know whether it's the fact that it's full coverage and I usually prefer light to medium coverage, but I find a little of this goes a long way. I love the texture and it blends very well, the shade is also an excellent match so this is a great option for fair skin tones like myself. However I do find that sometimes this can sit on my skin and it can also wear away in some areas of my face. It's a pity because once I apply the right amount I really love how it looks at first. It really does give excellent coverage, but I think it's just not suited to my skin and how I like my foundation to look. I much prefer their Miracle Air de Teint foundation which I reviewed in full last year. I tend to save this foundation for evening wear or events where I do sometimes like more coverage and I don't need it to last as long. If like me you prefer lighter coverage and can get oily throughout the day, I highly recommend trying Miracle Air de Teint instead.

MR4-2

My beloved Glossier Boy Brow has come to an end so I went in search of something to replace it. I was buying Soap and Glory Archery anyway because I love it and have repurchased it many many times now. As it was 3 for 2 on Soap and Glory in Boots I decided to try out their Archery Volu-Boost Brow Fibre Gel. It comes in three shades, I went for the darkest, Mocha Up Your Mind and it's a perfect match for my naturally dark brows. I really like this, it has a small wand and I like that the fibres helps to add volume to my sparse patches. The only thing that I don't like is that you have to be quite light handed or the product can get on your skin which tends to be the case with less expensive brow gels. However for €13.50, it's not a bad option until Glossier start shipping to Ireland (which I'm hoping will be soon).

MR18-2

On my eyes I wanted to create quite a simple look, so after priming my lids with the Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion*, I blended some of Tempera under my brow bone and then Venetian Red on the lid and blended it out. I applied Antique Bronze on my lower lash line and then KIKO Glamorous Eye Pencil in 401 on my water line which is a gorgeous bronze shade and is sadly discontinued but they have a similar colour in their Intense Colour Long Lasting Eyeliner range. NYX Professional Makeup Slide on Eye Pencil in Golden Bronze is quite similar too. I then curled my lashes using the Eyeko Black Magic Lash Curler that I recently got free in Marie Claire (it replaced my other Eyeko curler which was broken). I then applied my new mascara MAC Upward Lash which was a birthday gift from my sister. I absolutely love this, I'll definitely be writing a full review soon.

MR6-2

I concealed my hormonal breakouts (I got a gorgeous one in between my brows for my birthday!) and under my eyes with the Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer. I'm not loving this under my eyes, I need to get something that's a bit more hydrating but it'll do for now. It works wonders on the rest of my face though and it's so inexpensive, yet another product I've repurchased again and again. Another Collection product I've been loving recently is the Contour Stick in the shade light (it's actually only €3.99 in Boots at the moment) and it's a great option if you're fair skinned like me and you want a little bit of natural contour that's easy to apply and blend.

MR22

On my cheeks I applied a little Glossier Cloud Paint in Puff. I absolutely adore this! I wish I'd gotten another shade (or three). It's so light and easy to use and looks pretty and natural. I'll be writing a full review of this soon too. I used some of the No7 Instant Radiance Highlighter which is a cream stick and again it's so quick and easy to use. Mine is almost gone and I'll definitely be repurchasing it.

MR1-2

I finished my skin with the Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray* which I've repurchased several times and is such a great setting spray. I use this in lieu of and as well as powder depending on the occasion or how long I need my makeup to last. It also comes in a handy 30ml travel size that costs €12 and is great for keeping in your bag for touching up throughout the day. I know so many people who swear by this too.

I finished the look with something really simple on my lips, the Glossier Lip Gloss. This is a clear lip gloss that feels quite similar on to the Clarins Lip Oils, almost like a thick oil rather than sticky which I hate (doesn't everyone, remember Juicy Tubes!). It also contains Vitamin E so it conditions your lips too. I bought this mainly for early noughties nostalgia purposes so I was surprised by how much I liked it. I think it's great for balancing out a strong matte eye look like this one. There's also nothing like gloss for making your lips instantly more full looking. It was very windy the day I wore this makeup so I actually ended up swapping the gloss for the Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche Lipstick in Meringue. The harsh Irish winds are the main reason I don't ever really wear glosses.

MR15-2

You can buy the Modern Renaissance palette in Ireland from Beauty Bay/ Cult Beauty and the Anastasia Beverly Hills UK site at €50.50 (shipping is free on orders over €22), £41 (converts to approximately €45, plus shipping is free to Ireland if you're spending over £40) and £41 (again shipping is free to Ireland when you spend over £25) respectively. I bought the palette in Sephora for $42 which converted to about €36. So if you're in the US, you can get it much cheaper but other than that, Cult Beauty and the ABH UK site are the best options.

So what do you think of this look? Have you tried the Modern Renaissance palette or any of the other products I mentioned?

Face Of The Day- Lady Danger

The other day I went into Arnotts to get another MAC Prep + Prime Lip because I haven't had one for a while and I was really missing it. I had been saving up some empties for Back to MAC so I got Lady Danger lipstick which I've never owned before but have wanted to try for years.

I tried it the next day with very minimal makeup and loved it immediately. It's the perfect yellow based red that I've been wanting for Summer. I had more time today to play around with my makeup so I went a bit crazy and paired it with some gold eyeshadow from the Lorac Pro palette. I thought it was a bit much at first, but I kept the skin and brows quite simple so it wasn't too overpowering. There's something completely clashing about the gold and red combination but because they both have warm tones it somehow works (hopefully!)

FOTDLD2

I went to an event for the brand Artistry last week, I had heard of them but didn't know much about their products and had never tried any myself. I got chatting to one of the Artistry ladies and she very kindly ended up giving my their Ideal Radiance Illuminating CC Cream to take home with me. I was so excited to try it out as I always love to discover new brands. I used this for the first time yesterday and I was hugely impressed with how my skin looked. It blended out easily and gave my skin a subtle luminosity. It has broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection and SPF 50 so it's perfect for trying at this time of year. I want to write a full review of this and compare it to the IT Cosmetics CC Cream which I'm also trying out at the moment so keep an eye out for that.

I curled my lashes with the Eyeko Lash Curler before starting my eye makeup. I used Glossier Boy Brow on my brows (you can read my full review here). Then I applied some Urban Decay Primer Potion and the Gold shade from the Lorac Pro palette. I blended it out and added some of the matte brown shade Taupe under my eyes with a little bit of Gold blended in too. I love this palette a lot, it's got a great selection of shades and the pigmentation, especially in the satin shades is amazing. I applied a thin line of Kat Von D Tattoo Liner and my current favourite lash combination Lancôme Cils Booster XL and L'Oréal Miss Baby Roll mascara (which you can read about in more detail here).

FOTDLD13

I blended some Glossier Stretch Concealer under my eyes with a Real Techniques Mini Eraser Sponge. This was only me second time using it so I want to give it more time before I write a more in-depth review. To finish my face makeup I used the Collection Precision Contouring stick in Light which I've been loving recently. It's a great shade for fair skin and it's hard to overdo it because it's not too pigmented but is creamy and easy to blend so it looks quite natural. I added a small amount of the Bourjois Aqua Blush in CocoriCorail which is one of my all time favourite liquid blushes and if you don't have one do yourself a favour and get one, they're so amazing, especially during the Summer (see them in action here).

FOTDLD5

I finished my skin with the No7 Instant Radiance Highlighter which I love for adding a quick glow to the tops of my cheeks, down the centre of my nose and on my cupids bow. It's subtle and blends easily so it's a great one for the Summer when you want a quick glow to your skin.

To finish I used my new MAC Prep + Prime lip and let it sink in for a minute before applying Lady Danger. I didn't use a lip liner because I didn't want the lips to look too overdone. This lipstick totally lives up to my expectations. It's matte so it lasts really well and doesn't feather but it definitely benefits from using the lip primer first otherwise it could feel quite drying. I think I'm going to be wearing it a lot in the Summer with just CC Cream and lots of mascara.

FOTDLD4

To completely finish off the look I lined my lower waterline with my KIKO Glamorous Eye Pencil in 401 which is a gorgeous bronze shade (and now seems to be discontinued) but I love how it looks against my green eyes. This is a lot more makeup than I would usually wear on a daily basis but I love playing around with different colour combinations at the weekend when I have a bit more time.

What do you think of this look? Have you tried any of these products?

Face Of The Day- Pink In The Afternoon

It's been a while since I've written one of these Face of the Day posts and yet they're some of my favourite to do because I love writing about lots of different products in the one post, giving an overview of some of my current favourites and anything that isn't working for me.

I've been wearing very minimal makeup recently, barely any liner or eyeshadow mainly focusing on brows, blush, lashes and lips. Entirely influenced by wanting extra time in bed in the morning and by the ever inspiring Katie Jane Hughes who I've been following for a while now and if you are into makeup in any way, you should definitely check out her Instagram and Youtube channel

In my mission to try to 'shop my stash' and wear more from my makeup collection, I took out an old favourite, Revlon Pink in the Afternoon lipstick and created a very simple, minimal sixties inspired look to go with it.

FOTDPITA4

The reason I decided on a sixties look is because Pink in the Afternoon is reportedly the lipstick Audrey Hepburn wears in the 1961 film Breakfast at Tiffany's. After much online research there doesn't seem to be a definitive answer as to whether it actually is the lipstick from this scene where Holly Golightly utters the famous line "A girl can't read that sort of thing without her lipstick" in the back of the cab at the end of the film. There is a lot of evidence that it is the lipstick, the packaging for one is very similar to images I found of Revlon lipstick packaging from the 1960s which at the time was all gold. A few years before she made Breakfast at Tiffany's, Hepburn starred in a film called 'Love in the Afternoon', she was also in at least one Revlon ad that I found. There was also a vintage Revlon lipstick ad I found with a model dressed as Holly Golightly. I don't know if anyone knows for sure or if it just started as a good guess that became "fact". If anyone has any definite proof please let me know. It was fun to research all the same!

FOTDPITA13

I began by using the No7 Skin Illuminator all over my face as a primer to add a glow to my skin before foundation. I love this stuff, it's great to blend onto the high points of the face as a subtle highlighter or for a more natural glow. It's not too obvious which is perfect for the days when you want the more "lit from within" look. It also works amazingly as a primer for any foundation, but maybe steer clear using it all over the face if you have oily skin. For foundation I used No7 Stay Perfect which I hadn't used in a long time and I had forgotten what an excellent foundation it is. If you love No7 Stay Perfect Superlight like me, but you need/like a bit more coverage, this is a good alternative as it blends just as easily and lasts all day.

FOTDPITA8

After foundation I always do my brows, this time I used another favourite, Soap and Glory Archery Brow Filling Pencil and Brush in the shade Brownie Points which if I'm not mistaken is the middle shade of the three available and a little lighter in colour than my usual shade but I like a lighter brow coming into Spring and Summer. I lightly filled in my brows only where needed and set them with my beloved Lancôme Sourcils Styler

I wanted to create a big winged liner as I haven't worn liner in ages, I used the Rodial Smokey Eye Pen first and blended it out, then the YSL Couture Eye Marker which is an interesting concept as it's a felt marker but the tip of it is cut at an angle meaning you can create thin or thicker lines depending on what angle you hold it at. I have to say it took me a few times to get used it, I didn't find using it as easy as I thought I would at first. Once I got the hang of it though, it was actually easy enough to create a wing quite quickly and it dries matte which I love. However I find with both this and the Rodial pencil, after just a few hours of wear my liner is smudged around my eyes and the wing starts to disappear which I hate and is the reason I tend to go for long lasting or waterproof liner and mascara to ensure that it doesn't happen. Both products are fine for just creating a thin line along the lashes but they just don't last on me if I wing them out. I don't even have particularly oily eyelids either. If YSL made a waterproof version of this it would be much better, but at €29 I expect excellent staying power.

To finish off the eyes I used Lancôme Hypnôse mascara which was a Christmas gift (I'd never tried it before) and needs to be replaced but is an unbelievable mascara that gives everything I love, length, volume, definition and is buildable. It's not waterproof but I've had absolutely no issues with smudging or flaking.

FOTDPITA10

I put on a little bit of Catrice Liquid Camouflage under my eyes and on a lovely hormonal spot on my  chin. This is a great budget concealer, the shade range is excellent and it's waterproof so it's amazing on blemishes if you tend to get oily throughout the day.

I delved into my makeup collection once again and brought out another old favourite, MAC Well Dressed blush. It's a pretty cool toned pink very similar to Benefit Dandelion both of which are perfect shades for fair skin ladies like myself.

I added a slight touch of theBalm Mary-Lou Manizer on my cheeks just for a little extra glow.

FOTDPITA7 FOTDPITA14
Revlon Pink in the Afternoon; Bellápierre Cosmetics Cat Walk; Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk

I finished the look with the lipstick that started it all, Pink in the Afternoon. I was obsessed with Revlon lipsticks back in the day and they're still some of my all time favourites. You really can't go wrong with a good Revlon lipstick after all these years. As you can see from the photo above I found some shades that are similar to Pink in the Afternoon, but both are a lot more expensive.

FOTDPITA2

You can see from the photos of the liner the how it looks with my eyes closed and looking forward. The shape looks a bit strange when my eyes are closed but when I look ahead you can see the wing is perfect for my eye shape.

I really hope you enjoyed this post and my little paragraph on makeup history.

Have you tried this lipstick?

Face of the Day- Haute Chocolate

This make up look is the one I wore when we took my latest outfit photos. I wanted something fresh and pretty that wouldn't detract from or clash with the bright pink coat I was wearing. This is what I came up with and I think it would be ideal for any occasion because it's so subtle.

I began by using my current favourite foundation, Lancôme Miracle Air de Teint in the shade Beige Porcelaine which from what I can tell is the third lightest shade. I won't go too much into my thoughts on this because I have an entire blog post drafted reviewing it in detail. However I think the photos speak for themselves, this is a beautiful foundation.

I think I tend to apply my make up in a different order to most other people. From what I've seen on Youtube and more recently on Snapchat, the majority of people tend to apply their entire face make up first and then brows and eyes. After foundation I usually curl my lashes, apply eyeshadow primer and then fill in my brows because I feel like they anchor the face so much and nothing else looks right until they are done.

FOTD4

I was given this Too Faced palette as a gift from the lovely Emma (if you haven't yet read her blog, it's wonderful!). I've been playing around with it over the past few months and I've been really enjoying creating different looks with it. It's one of the only palettes I have that isn't Urban Decay so it had a lot to live up to. I'm very impressed with the shade range, pigmentation and quality of this palette (and the fact that it smells like chocolate, I can't stop sniffing it while I'm using it!). I'm drawn back to it again and again and I've found this is one of my favourite eyeshadow combinations in the palette so far. I applied Marzipan all over the lid (the second shade from left on the middle row) and Haute Chocolate on the outer corner (third from left on the bottom row). Then I applied White Chocolate under the brows and Champagne Truffle on the inner corners (the two largest shades).

FOTD1

I finished off the eyes with my all time favourite liquid liner, the Urban Decay 24/7 Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner in Perversion. I've written about it before but if you love liquid liner and you havent tried this one yet, you really need to check it out. The brush is slim so you can get a thin line or build it up to a thicker winged line if you prefer. The waterproof formula makes it ideal for all day wear. You'll need an oil based make up remover to take it off but that's the only downside to it, which I don't consider an issue because I use an oil based remover anyway. The mascara I'm using at the moment is the Bourjois Volume Glamour Ultra Curl which I have a review of here. I really like this mascara for daytime use as it holds a curl very well and gives length and definition.

FOTD9

To brighten under my eyes I used some YSL Touche Éclat which has become a firm favourite of mine since first trying it last year. I've actually used it every day since I got it and it's just run out so a repurchase of that is definitely necessary as soon as possible. I added some of the Clarins Instant Light Concealer under my eyes and on any redness or blemishes which thankfully there aren't too many of at the moment.

FOTD6

I added a touch of NYX Blush in Taupe under my cheekbones, Benefit Sugarbomb on my cheeks and theBalm May-Lou Manizer on my cheekbones and a little down the centre of my nose. I finished my skin off with No7 Perfect Light Loose Powder on the centre of my face, my forehead and chin.

I applied a light coat of Charlotte Tilbury Bitch Perfect lipstick because like I said above I didn't want the make up to be too much with the outfit. This is my go to nude for when I've done my eyes. I can't really wear this unless I'm wearing noticeable eye make up.

Face of the Day- Bitch Perfect

I wore this make up look last weekend and I liked it so much that I wanted to share it with you all. The look is centred around this quick and easy smoky brown/bronze eye. I used the shade Factory from the Urban Decay Naked 3 palette which I blended out with the matte shade Limit. This created a really easy multi-dimensional smoky eye. I then added some dark brown pencil liner from No7 to my lower lash line and water line and blended it out before adding some of the Factory shade on top of the pencil.

FOTDBP1
FOTDBP4

I finished off the eyes by curling my lashes with my new eyelash curler from Eyeko which is amazing at making my eyes look wider. I think I prefer it slightly to my Shu Uemura one. I used one of my favourite mascaras, Volume Clubbing by Bourjois which is great for anyone who loves voluminous lashes.

FOTDBP8

I wanted to have natural but flawless skin so I used one of my current favourite base combinations of the L'Oréal Nude Magique Blur Cream (which is very similar to Benefit The Porefessional) and No7 Stay Perfect foundation which gives a little more coverage than the Superlight version that I reviewed recently. The Blur Cream is great for blurring pores and smoothing out the texture of the skin, I like to use it just on the centre of my face. I've found the key to the Stay Perfect foundation is to use less product and you end up with a very natural but even finish to your skin. These two products make a great combination for days when your skin needs a little more help to look it's best.

FOTDBP3

My dark circles weren't too bad so i just used a little bit of the No7 Instant Radiance Concealer under my eyes and at the sides of the bridge of my nose to lighten up the area. It's such an easy product to use, it blends effortlessly onto the skin and doesn't crease or look too heavy.

FOTDBP6

I finished off my skin by using a stunning new product from YSL, Les Sahariennes, a balm-powder that gives a sun-kissed perfecting glow to the skin. I used it to contour my face a little bit, along my forehead and nose and across my cheeks in lieu of blush. I won't say too much about it now because I plan on writing an in-depth review before it's release on May 27th, but after just a few uses I'm already smitten.

I didn't use powder because I didn't need the make up to last that long and it allowed my skin to look sun-kissed and glowy.

To finish off the look, I used one of the most gorgeous nude lipstick's I've ever used, Bitch Perfect by Charlotte Tilbury. First of all the formula of these lipsticks applies beautifully and I've found it to last very well for such a creamy texture. The shade is perfection, as the name suggests. I feel like this would suit every skin tone it's just one of those colours. It just makes me want more of Charlotte's lipsticks. If you're on the fence about investing in one of her lipsticks, let me just gently nudge you over the fence. You won't regret it.

Face of the Day- Divine Wine

I was a little worse for wear this morning after a work night out and so I decided to take some time and play around with my makeup and make myself look more fresh than I felt.

I started off by using my favourite face mask at the moment, REN Invisible Pores Detox Mask, which is exactly what my skin needed. After spritzing my face with the worlds best invigorator Caudalie Beauty Elixir, I moisturised and then applied some Clarins Beauty Flash Balm, my secret weapon for a quick skin fix.

FOTD8

I decided to use Max Factor Facefinity foundation because it's supposed to be a primer, foundation and concealer in one. I've found that less is more with this, using one pump of product I applied it with a Real Techniques Stippling Brush and I found it gave a nice medium coverage which is exactly what I wanted for my skin today.

I filled in and set my brows, curled my lashes and then applied my new favourite eye product, Bare Minerals 5 in 1 BB Advanced Cream Eyeshadow (bit of a mouthful!) in Divine Wine. This is a gorgeous product and it's so easy to use. I'll be doing a full review very soon.

FOTD1

I recently got this No7 eye pencil as a free gift with purchase and I really love how it gives some subtle Autumnal colour to my makeup look. It's so easy to work with and blend, I applied some to the outer upper lash line and along the lower lash line and blended it with the sponge applicator on the end of the pencil.

I curled my eyelashes with my Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler, then I used Clinique High Impact Mascara on my top and bottom lashes, applying a second coat to the top lashes only. I got this sample size free with a magazine and I absolutely love it, I can see why it gets raved about in the blogging community.

FOTD5

After mascara I put a little of the No7 Instant Radiance Concealer on the dark circles under my eyes. This is a pink tinted light reflecting concealer that is a lovely light consistency and blends so easily. I like using very light textured products under my eyes because the skin there is so delicate. I usually have to double conceal, so I used a tiny amount of the NYX HD Photogenic Concealer on top of the No7 one.

I felt like I only wanted a hint of colour on my cheeks so I went for MAC Well Dressed which I think went really nicely with the brown/purple eyes. Then I used my new favourite product, NARS Contour Blush in Olympia. I have a full post on this ready to go so I won't say too much except that I've been using it every single day since I bought it.

FOTD9

I always finish by powdering the centre of my face as it can get a bit shiny throughout the day. For the past few months I've been using Vichy Dermablend Setting Powder and I love it. It's translucent and so light on my skin, I definitely recommend giving it a go if you're in the market for a new powder.

Last but not least, my favourite part, choosing a lip colour. I felt like wearing something quite natural and understated on my lips so I choose this stunning Givenchy Rouge Interdit lipstick in Voluptuous Nude, another one I will be reviewing properly soon. It was slightly too light for the rest of the makeup so I put my favourite nude lip gloss over the top. I actually got this lip gloss in a Glossybox and my sister thought it was so nice on me that she ordered a full size one for herself and we both wear it all the time. It's my go-to nude because I feel like it's the perfect shade for my skin tone and goes with any makeup look. I can't believe I haven't featured it here yet, but I definitely want to do an in depth review.

I know it looks like I used a lot of products but it actually didn't take that long at all to do.  I feel like some people might think I do my makeup in a strange order. I like to do my foundation, brows, eyes and then my concealer, blush, contouring, highlighting and powder. Does anyone else do it this way?

I hope you enjoyed the post, it's something I haven't really done before so let me know if you would like to see more Face of the Day posts.

What products do you use when you need to make yourself look fresh?
